We were gone for a few days over New Years, staying with family. In the old days, we may have driven back and forth rather than spending the night, but these days, with tight funds and high gas prices, that $25 round trip price got us to spend the nights away from home. To save money, and perhaps offset the gas costs, we turned down our furnace.
Maybe we turned it down too much.
The thermostat was set at fifty degrees, warm enough to prevent frost inside or frozen pipes as nighttime temperatures hovered near freezing.
We got home at about 10 pm. The house was a refrigerator. We cranked the furnace up, and started warming the house up. Normally, we keep the door from the hall (floor furnace location) to the living room closed, especially at night. That didn’t work as we tried to heat up the house. We…
