5 no-cost energy saving tips for the winter

Winter isn’t just coming—it’s here. And during the winter, you might notice that your energy bills rise surprisingly high. What can you do about it? Well, quite a bit! But if you’re not about to drop a few grand on a new ENERGY STAR appliance, you can follow these cost-free tips and start saving energy.

 

  1. Set your thermostat to 68° degrees and turn it down by 5° at night or when you’re leaving the house. Maybe not always viable with small children, and if it’s too cold, definitely turn it up a bit…but consider adjusting to the lower temperatures. At night, since you’re asleep and under the covers, you shouldn’t feel the cold as much.
  2. Set your water heater lower. We recommend 120°, or “low”. Adjusting temperature by just 10° can save you up to 5% on your heating costs.
