Every winter, carbon monoxide poisoning and chimney fires take lives.  It is so important to have fuel-burning heaters, including air-tight high-efficiency units, checked for leaks and proper ventilation.  In addition, if you have a wood-burning heater or fireplace, it is important to verify that its chimney is not susceptible to fire from flammable creosote deposits that have built up on the inside.  To ensure your flue is safe from this danger and to see that there is no potential for exhaust leaks or back drafts, hire a trustworthy expert to check your unit and its venting.  In addition, every home with a fuel-burning unit should have a reliable CO detector as an essential safety precaution.  As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
